Previously sold in these Rooms, 20 March 1990, lot 917.
Compare with a jade carving of a single horse also incised with a Qianlong mark in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Zhongguo Yuqi Quanji, Qing Dynasty, vol. 6, no. 267.
It is most unusual to find large animals carved from such pure white stone. Several examples of horses and buffalos from the Ming and Qing Dynasties are known, but in almost every case, the stone is an opaque dark colour, mottled green, grey or black. Cf. Chinese Jade Throughout the Ages, p.119, nos.391-395
