Lot Essay

Dickinson and Wrigglesworth discuss the Chao dai, or court belt in Imperial Wardrobe, p.155-156, where they mention that the purse-string matched the colour of the cloth belt, yellow being reserved for the Emperor. See pls.138 and 139 for two illustrations of Chao dai suspending purses and ceremonial kerchiefs from belt plaques.

Cf. several similar purses with yellow strings suspended around the Emperor's bed in the Hall of Peace and Happiness, Yangxitang, illustrated in The Forbidden City, Forbidden City Press, pl. 109
