A RARE NUMBERED JUNYAO TRIPOD NARCISSUS BOWL
NORTHERN SONG DYNASTY

The solidly potted shallow bowl resting on three ruyi-shaped feet, the rounded sides decorated two rows of evenly spaced bosses, one within a pair of raised bands below the rim, the other above the the feet, covered in a thick glaze of mottled milky-lavender tone, the exterior draining to a rich plum glaze, thinning to a olive-green tone on the edges of the rim, moulded relief and feet, the flat base incised with the character san (three) encircled by nineteen spur marks 8 1/4in. (21cm.) diam., box

Lot Essay

A similar bulb bowl, incised with the numeral 'three' is illustrated in Chinese Ceramics in the Idemitsu Collection, pl. 104; others incised with the numerals 'one', 'nine' and 'eight' in the National Palace Museum, Taibei, are included in the Catalogue, Chun Ware of the Sung Dynasty, pls.22-25 respectively.
