Inlaid overall with boxwood and ebony lines and crossbanded in tulipwood, the semi-circular hinged top with amaranth band and enclosing a baize-lined playing-surface, above a panelled frieze, on square tapering legs headed by concave cut-cornered panels, on spade feet, the gateleg-action replaced, restorations, basically 18th Century

Lot Essay

A related pair of pier-tables supplied in 1773 by Thomas Chippendale (d.1779) for Mersham-le-Hatch, Kent, is illustrated in P. Thornton, 'The Furnishing of Mersham-le-Hatch', Apollo, June 1970, p. 445, fig. 7. A further similar pair of satinwood card-tables, probably supplied to Richard Payne Knight for Downton Castle, Herefordshire, was offered anonymously, in these Rooms, 6 July 1995, lot 46.
