Lot Essay

This 'bason-stand' pattern, with columnar supports fitted with a drawer, ewer-tray and compartments for basin and bottles, features in the 1760 Estimate Sketch Book of Robert and Richard Gillow of Lancaster (L. Boynton (ed.), Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. III). A related pattern executed by Thomas Chippendale the following year, was illustrated in his The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, London, 3rd ed., 1762, pl. LIV alongside a shaving-table with 'pembroke' pattern flaps.
