Lot Essay

Thomas Hope illustrated related X-framed stools in the engraving of the drawing-room at his Duchess Street mansion museum, published in his Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London, 1807, pl. VI. Another related design, again with a ring-turned baluster stretcher, was published by W. Smee and Son in their Designs for Furniture of 1850 (E. Joy, Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th Century Furniture Design, Woodbridge, 1977, p. 176).
A similar X-framed rosewood stool by Holland and Son, was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 21 April 1994, lot 94.
