Lot Essay

The giltwood stand for this cabinet is similar to one for a Japanese-Export cabinet which was probably supplied to Elizabeth, Lady Astry (d. 1709) for Henbury, Gloucestershire, and later at Hinwick House, Bedfordshire. It was recorded in the Dining-Room at Henbury in a 1709 inventory, and described as a 'fine Japan cabinet with a gilt frame'. It descended in the Orlebar family until sold by The Reverend Ian Graham-Orlebar, in these Rooms, 9 April 1992, lot 172.
