Lot Essay

A baluster-railed tray of this serpentined pattern in the George II 'picturesque' manner, was sold from The Samuel Messer Collection in these Rooms, 5 December 1991, lot 71. The galleries of both trays are inlaid with golden ribbons of brass in the French manner now associated with Fredrick Hintz, who in 1738 advertised brass-inlaid 'Mahogany tea-tables, tea-chests, tea-boards etc..' (C. Gilbert and T. Murdoch, 'Channon Revisited', Furniture History, 1994, p. 75 and fig. 15, and John Channon and Brass Inlaid Furniture 1730-60, London, 1993, p. 136). Another pair of trays of this pattern, also on tripod 'claw' supports, was sold from The Grange by Knight, Frank and Rutley, 22nd-23rd March 1955, lots 116 and 117.

A related tray-top table was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 14 February 1992, lot 115.
