Lot Essay

The stamp 'Jones', recorded on a suite of chairs made for the 2nd Earl Talbot (d.1849) who was Viceroy of Ireland between 1817 and 1821, has been identified with William Jones, who was established in South King Street in the early 1820s. The chairs were sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 29 March 1984, lot 72 and again anonymously, 7 July 1994, lot 50. (see also The Knight of Glin, 'Dublin Trade Directories', Furniture History, 1985, pp. 267 and 268).
