A PAIR OF WALNUT AND ELM SIDE CHAIRS
18th 19th Century, possibly additions to an existing Chinese-Export set
Each with double-domed toprail above a pierced tapering splat with scrolled finials, the compass-fronted drop-in seat covered in gros point floral needlework, on acanthus and husk-carved cabriole legs and claw and ball feet, one seat inscribed 'Haselwood', restorations to splats, one with later walnut backright leg and stile, with pegged construction, traces of green paint (2)

Lot Essay

A pair of compass-fronted chairs, with related back and claw-footed legs, was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 25 June 1937, lot 105. The chairs are now in the Untermyer Collection, U.S.A, and are illustrated in English Furniture with Some Furniture of Other Countries in the Irwin Untermyer Collection, Norwich, 1958, pls. 78 and 79. The splats' fretted enrichments relate to patterns found on Windsor chairs manufactured in Yorkshire in the 19th Century (B. Cotton, The English Regional Chair, Woodbridge, 1990, pp. 201-205).
