Lot Essay

The cabinet's Egyptian-reeded columns with lion's paws and ring-bearing masks relates to the antique fashion promoted by George Smith's Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London, 1808. Similar decoration appears on an early 19th Century low bookcase from Brockelsby Park, Lincolnshire (M. Jourdain, Regency Furniture 1795-1830, London, 1949, fig. 152).
The combination and use of reeded pilasters, wide paw feet and a reeded top, is particularly seen on furniture from County Cork, Ireland.
