A SET OF SIX GEORGE III CREAM-PAINTED AND PARCEL-GILT SIDE CHAIRS
Each with an oval padded back and serpentine-fronted seat and seat-cushion covered in close-nailed simulated cream leather, the back centred by a spray of flowers and with a carved husk edge, with a beaded seat-rail, on ring-turned tapering fluted legs, one chair with break to toprail, each with cramp-cuts, batten carrying-holes and exposed back strutt, redecorated and with traces of earlier decoration (6)

Lot Essay

The rose-decked chairs have medallion backs, in the Louis XVI manner popularised by J.C. Delafosse, Le Meuble à L'Epoque Louis XVI, Paris. n.d., and, with their pearl-wreathed frames and fluted legs, relate to a pair of armchairs sold by order of the Executors of the late Major-General Sir John Marriott K.C.V.O, C.P., D.S.O., M.C., in these Rooms, 22 March 1979, lot 99, and another pair sold by Norman Adams Ltd. at the 1957 Grosvenor House Antique Dealers Fair and again at Sotheby's London, 16 November 1990, lot 328.
