Lot Essay

The pattern for the table's fluted legs with 'Gothic' ringed columnettes and foliated capitals, derives from a 'sideboard table' engraving of 1753 issued in Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, London, 3rd ed., 1762, pl. LX. Its arcaded frieze relates to the Gothic ornament of an alternative leg pattern issued in the same engraving. Related table legs featured on a sideboard table from Hinton House, Somerset, sold by Earl Poulett, Sotheby's London, 1 November 1968, lot 79. The cluster-columned leg also featured on a dressing-table executed in 1813 for Eaton Hall, Cheshire by Gillows of London and Lancaster (Gillows, Estimate Sketch Book, no. 1938, now in the Westminster City Library).
