Inlaid overall with fruitwood lines and crossbanded in amaranth, tulipwood and satinwood, the rectangular top with two hinged sections, one enclosing a fitted well, the central one enclosing a ratcheted mirror and fitted well, above a slide and a drawer on the left-hand side and two simulated frieze drawers, above a chequer band and a central door simulated as three drawers and enclosing a shelf, flanked on each side by an oval-panelled door enclosing a shelf, on later ring-turned baluster feet, two hinges stamped 'HORNE PATENT', the interior adapted, restorations

This dressing-commode relates to a commode supplied by Gillows to Elizabeth Brooke (d. 1809) for Mere Hall, Knutsford, Cheshire. It was sold by the Executors of the late Mrs. Heleen Langford-Brooke, Mere Hall, Christie's house sale, 23 May 1994, lot 104, and again anonymously, in these Rooms, 3 July 1997, lot 77.
