cover 1840 (10 Jan.) entire letter from Spalding to Milnthorpe, the address panel with manuscript "P 2" and the reverse showing fine strike of the black circular undated "SPALDING", the letter is headed January 9th but the content notes "On the 7th inst. I put up two letters for you, ready for the penny postage of tomorrow" and the combined weight resulted in the 2d. charge for over half an ounce.
