1978 MERCEDES-BENZ 600 PULLMAN LIMOUSINE
Chassis No: 100 014 12 002 527 Grey
Engine: 90° V8, single overhead camshaft per bank, bosch fuel injection, 6332cc, 300bhp at 4100rpm; Gearbox: four-speed automatic; Brakes: front and rear servo assisted discs, twin calliper to front; Suspension: hydro-pneumatic self-levelling independent with anti-roll bars. Left hand drive.
When in 1963 Mercedes-Benz introduced their majestic 600 series, it was the company's objective to build the best luxury car in the world. Each one was custom built precisely to meet the preferences of its purchaser. On the 600's introduction the motoring press was virtually unanimous in its praise, extolling ride, handling and unparallelled performance in the luxury field. Even today it is difficult to fault either the design or execution of this magnificent automobile. The advanced 6.3 litre V8 was provided with fuel injection and overhead camshafts and power flowed in abundance, enough to take the great car to over 130mph. It was available as a four-door limousine, Pullman, six-door limousine or Pullman landaulette.
Traditional though its comforts might be, in the 600 series its creators adopted the most unitary construction methods for the huge hull, incorporating the then new idea of "crumple zones" at front and rear to protect the cabin and its occupants in a collision. Other technical features were as advanced. There was fully independent air suspension with adjustable damping and controllable ride height. The steering wheel was adjustable for both height and rake, there was central locking, separate air-conditioning for both front and rear compartments. Windows could be opened and seats adjusted by smooth, virtually silent hydraulic mechanisms. Even the rear boot lid was power assisted. Mercedes-Benz were able to number many of the worlds most prominent and powerful figures in the list of clients for the 600, including Pope Paul, Marshal Tito and Chairman Mao.
In its time it was a unique automobile, almost immediately recognised as a classic and still hugely desirable.
This car is described as being in very good condition throughout, and has recorded only 33,000km from new.
