A rare Continental parcel-gilt silver figure of an angel
Possibly Northern France, 14th century, apparently unmarked
The standing figure in realistically chased garmant with sockets for hands and wings (now missing), his chest with vacant plaque for a reliquary

Lot Essay

Spectrographic analysis confirms the above dating.

This reliquary can be compared to the two angels flanking the Virgin Mary of the reliquary of Elizabeth of Hungary, (illustrated D. Ludke, Die Statuetten der Gotischen Goldschmiede, Munich, 1983, no. 255). Further comparison can be made with an angel exhibited in the Westfalisches Landesmuseum fr Kunst und Kulturgeschichte, Mnster.
