Lot Essay

Lots 171, 172 and 174 are good examples of the Space Age jewellery executed in the 1960s. Much influenced by attempts of the United States and the Soviet Union to land a man on the moon, the jewellery and fashion industries were abounding with space themes. The celebrated couturier André Courreges named his 1964 collection "Space Age". A typical outfit of the time by Pierre Cardin is pictured to the left in which a woman is outfitted to look like an astronaut.
