René Boivin was extremely fond of flowers. Throughout his career, and even after his death in 1917, the house of Boivin was known for their superb floral creations. Interested in all aspects of botany, the jeweller subscribed to many publications, amongst them "Nos Fleurs, plantes utiles et nuisibles" and "L'Atlas de l'Orchidée". His preferred plant was, in fact, the orchid, a flower brought into fashion by the natural leanings of the Art Nouveau. He created his first orchid brooch in 1900 and during the course of the firm's history, the motif became nearly talismanic.

As the initial stages of Boivin's career (the 1890s) were more oriented towards goldsmithing, his jewels always maintained a sculptural flavour. This is a delightful example. It demonstrates his sensibility for the flower's movement. The viewer can envision its blooming and the gentle unfurling of its leaves. His floral jewels are certainly amongst the most exquisite of their genre created in the 20th Century.
