Lot Essay
Natural green colour in diamonds is, after red, the rarest of all hues. The present diamond is not only certified as natural yellowish green, but also bears the distinction of having the highest degree of saturation granted by the Gemological Institute of America, that of vivid. This stone is the first certified vivid yellowish green diamond ever to be offered at auction.
The green colour is caused by exposure of the diamond crystal to natural irradiation whilst it is still in the earth. High energy particles penetrate the stone's lattice, producing defects that act as colour absorbing centres which generate a green hue in the diamond.
