Details
AN EDWARDIAN DIAMOND AND PEARL BAR BROOCH
Set with a graduated row of five circular-cut diamonds within a diamond-set scrolling frame, the centre stone flanked by two pearls, two grey pearls and four further diamonds (the brooch can be adapted by the removal of the outer two sections to form a three-stone brooch)
In original fitted case retailed by Hennell & Sons
Provenance
Commissioned in 1911 from Hennell & Sons by the Grandfather of the present owner as a gift to his wife on the occasion of their silver wedding - the diamonds representing their five sons, the pearls their four daughters, two of whom died in infancy.
At that time he was Senior House Master at Harrow School and penned the now famous letter to Winston Churchill's mother, which appears in Randolph's biography - stating that Churchill was "...so regular in his irregularity.. (that he)..ought to be at the top of his form whereas he is at the bottom..." and ending with the prophetic words "..He is a remarkable boy in many ways and it would be a thousand pities if such good abilities were made useless by habitual negligence. I ought not to close without telling you that I am very pleased with some history work he has done for me".
