Lot Essay

The Dordrecht born artist was a pupil of the Antwerp master Andreas Lens. His style reflects the influence of the 17th century Dutch masters, most notably his fellow citizen Aelbert Cuyp. He was probably familiar with Cuyp's work through the collection of Johan van der Linden van Slingeland in Dordrecht, who possessed over 30 pictures by Cuyp (see Tussen Zonnegoud en Kaarslicht, exhibition catalogue, Dordrechts Museum 1986, p.16).
