Lot Essay

These prints and those in the following two lots come from a series of 24 published in 6 sets of four in Paris in 1799-1801. Wilfrid Blunt, in his The art of botanical illustration, London, 1950, described them as `...probably the finest engravings of flowers ever made', and they are generally regarded as matching the quality of Redouté's prints.
A special edition of the prints was partly printed in colours.
