Joseph Istler was a representative of the Czech Surrealist group called Ra and the only member of that group taking part in Cobra activities. Although it wasn't mentioned in the catalogue, Istler exhibited graphic work at the Cobra exhibition in Luik in 1951. With a Czechoslovakian Surrealist background, Istler is said to have developed a style in those years which was halfway between lyrical abstraction and the fantastic.
