Lot Essay

The present lot is a preparatory drawing for the print illustrated in R.K. de Silva, Early Prints of Ceylon 1800-1900, London 1985, p. 347.

During the years 1854-1857 Hermann and his brothers Robert and Adolphe were commissioned by the directors of the East India Company to undertake a scientific mission to India and High Asia. In 1857, the year Adolphe died, they published an atlas of panoramas and views of India and High Asia. A further publication of four volumes of the work they made during this mission was published in London and Leipzig in 1861.
