Lot Essay

The Herengracht no. 476 (second from the left) was sold at a public auction by the heirs of Aarnout van Lennep (1718-1812) to the wealthy banker Henric Muilman (1743-1812). The house sheltered his collection of over two-hundred paintings, amongst which the Kitchen Maid and the Lace Maker by Johannes Vermeer. After Muilman's death his son Willem Ferdinand Mogge Muilman (1778-1849) reconstructed the facade in its current situation.
