Lot Essay

The present picture connects with Gillis van Coninxloo's work of circa 1595-1606, when he had settled in Amsterdam, for instance his landscapes of 1598 and of 1604 in the Fýrst Liechtensteinische Gemäldesammlung, Vaduz (H.G. Franz, Niederländische Landschaftsmalerei im Zeitalter des Manierismus, II, 1969, p. 221, nos435/6, with ill.), and that of 1605 in the Historisches Museum der Pfalz, Speyer (H.G. Franz, op. cit., II, p. 222, no437, with ill.) As pointed out by Franz, op cit., I, p. 271, these late landscapes show Coninxloo at his best, with the balanced play of light and his diagonal visions seen with a lowered viewpoint.
