P. Scheen, Lexicon Nederlandse Beeldende Kunstenaars 1750-1950, 1969, V, p.64, records that the artist, born in Burgsteinfurt, was active in Amsterdam from 1739 onwards. He is mostly known for his room decorations. Cabinet pictures, such as the present lot, are rare in his oeuvre.
