The attribution to Jan Claesz. was first suggested by R.E.O. Ekkart, who discovered the similarity between the portrait of Kenou Jacobsdr., dated 1616, in the former orphanage, Enkhuizen (Ekkart, op. cit., p.204, fig. 34) and the present picture. The sitter here wears traditional Enkhuizer costume, while her braided hair is tied in a red ribbon, a fashion typical of Enkhuizen.
