Lot Essay

In 1521 Albrecht Dýrer visited Antwerp, where he painted a Saint Jerome for Ruy Fernández de Almeida, ambassador to King John III. The popularity of Dýrer's painting is shown by numerous copies and engravings; most notably those by Joos van Cleve and his studio; for these see M. J. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting, IXA, 1972, p.58, nos39A-E, figs.39A,B,C. Vreem's career is documented by A. Houbraken, De Groote Schouburg, etc., III, 1753, pp.305/6, where he is recorded as active in Dordrecht as a pupil of Godfried Schalcken.
