Lot Essay

A. Houbraken, De Groote Schouburgh, etc., II, 1753, pp.80/1, praised Murants's detailed rendering of masonry of ramshackle farms in rural settings. The same detailed rendering of masonry is found in the work of Jan van der Heyden, with whom Murant is often confused. However, while Murant concentrated chiefly on rural landscapes, Van der Heyden was the foremost painter of city views.
