Lot Essay
Little is known about the Antwerp born painter, who is said to have worked in Pieter Brueghel II's studio. Only a few signed works have come down to us, among which a kermesse is in the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Antwerp (Catalogus Schilderkunst Oude Meesters, 1988, p.30, no811, with ill.). The present picture is to be compared with the Kermesses, traditionally accepted as by Balten, in a private collection, Rome (G. Marlier, Pierre Brueghel Le Jeune, 1969, p.452, fig. 294) and in a private collection, Paris (G. Marlier, op. cit, p.453, fig. 295). Similar is the rendering of the faces of the figures and their placing in the foreground, with a city view beyond.
