The present picture belongs to a group of still lifes by an as yet anonymous hand, who was probably active in Antwerp in the second half of the seventeenth century. He is provisionally called the Pseudo-Simons, as his style reflects that of the still life painter Michiel Simons, who was probably born in Flanders and who later moved to Utrecht. The group includes still lives offered at Sotheby's London, 7 December 1988, lot 134, with ill., as Michiel Simons and offered at Christie's London, 21 October 1994, lot 36, with ill, as Circle of Michiel Simons.
