The finely modelled stand shaped as a tree-trunk with two putti playing with rich drapery wrapped around the upper section, the knotted wood applied with rosettes in relief (basket missing, base cracks)

Lot Essay

The original Meissen prototypes date around 1740 and would have formed part of a table centrepiece placed on a large tray together with surrounding smaller bowls for oil and spices. Cf. For a similar example see David S. Howard, The Choice of the Private Trader, no.143, p.136.
