An Arita blue and white plate
Late 17th Century
The central roundel enclosing the monogram of the VOC (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie), surrounded by a brace of phoenixes and fruiting branches, the well and rim with alternate radiating panels of bamboo and flowers (small rim chip to the outer rim)
21 cm diam.

Lot Essay

Although no special mention is made in trade documents of the VOC concerning Arita ware inscribed with the company's monogram, it is generally assumed that they were ordered for the use of the staff based in Deshima and Batavia.
