Lot Essay
Only a few occassional egg-shell services are known. Two of these were presented by Rozenburg itself to the receiver while only one concerns a private commission. The occassional services can be recognized not only by the use of coat-of-arms and monograms as part of the decoration but especially by the use of commemorative text which is very characteristic for this type of pieces.
The representation of the hop plant, the barrel and the crowned shield on the service offered for sale here all can be traced back to the commissioner, the Zuid-Hollandsche Bierbrouwerij. The monogram CJD refers to the receiver C.J. Duurentijdt. Coincidentally the crowned shield and stork also come back in the marks Rozenburg used from December 1900 until August 1914 when production stopped.
cf. Rozenburg 1883-1917 Geschiedenis van een Haagse fabriek, Haags Gemeentemuseum, Den Haag, 1983, p. 217 also for illustrations of two commemorative egg-shell porcelain services
