Ehret's publication Plantae et Papiliones Rariores, Leiden, 1736, bears testimony to his talents as an artist of butterflies and not merely of plants. His depiction of the various species also classified by Linnaeus are both decorative and accurate: Ehret's interest in natural history extended also to shells, fossils and insects.
