Wilson for C.Loddiges & Sons and others, 1818-1833. 20 volumes, 4° (210 x 160mm). 16pp. general index at back of vol.XX. Engraved additional titles, 2,000 hand-coloured engraved plates by George Cooke after G.Loddiges, W.Loddiges, Miss J.Loddiges, G.Cooke, E.W.Cooke, W.I.Cooke, Thomas Shotter Boys, W.Miller, P.Heath, J.P.Heath and Miss Rebello, three uncoloured plates. (Some spotting, particularly to titles, vol.IX with some offsetting of text onto plates, small hole in plate no.440, text leaf to plate no.733 with tear to lower blank margin.) Vols. XI-XX: contemporary brown half calf, spines in five compartments with raised bands, lettered in two, the others with repeat symmetrical decoration in gilt and blind, by Robinson (occasional light scuffing to spines, some small splits to joints); vols. I-X: later half calf bound to match using old boards. Provenance: George Banks (armorial bookplate); H.C.Drayton (sale: Sothebys, 27 November 1967, lot 139, sold 440 pounds).

A fine set of the large paper issue of the Loddiges monumental work, originally published in monthly fasicles between May 1817 and December 1833, with each part containing ten plates and priced at 5s. The small paper issue (with the plates only partially hand-coloured) was issued simultaneously at 2s 6d per part. The text for plate number 2000 (an orchid, named by Lindley Cynoches Loddigesii) includes a final statement "Having been able to complete our twentieth volume... our labours are closed; the precarious state of our draughtsman's health not permitting him to go any further.." In this copy vol IX is bound with: Catalogue of Plants in the Collection of Conrad Loddiges & Sons..thirteenth edition London: Wilson, 1823, 4°, pp.[1]-48. Cf.Stafleu & Cowan 4913.

Conrad Loddiges, a Dutch-born horticulturalist, settled in Hackney as a nurseryman in about 1761. The present work was edited by his son, George (1784-1846).
