(vols.III-XVI), 1834-1849. 16 volumes, large 8° (vols.I-XV: 232 x 162mm.; vol.XVI: 246 x 168mm). 717 hand-coloured engraved or lithographed flower plates by F.W.Smith or S.Holden, 28 folding or double-page, 6 plates of designs for gardens, numerous wood-engraved illustrations. (Some plates shaved with slight loss to image as usual, 8 of the folding plates with creases or repaired folds, some light spotting or browning, particularly to vols.VI and VII.) Contemporary light brown calf, gilt, spines with dark brown morocco lettering-pieces (vols.II and III rebacked with old spine laid down, vols.IV-VI with spines sligtly scuffed). A FINE SET. The correct number of plates is not known with certainty, Stafleu and Cowan quote the New York Botanical Society copy (with 723 plates as per the present copy) but say that they "are not sure that 723 is the exact number of plates issued". Nissen calls for 768 plates. Nissen BBI 2351; Stafleu & Cowan 7554. Sold as a periodical, not subject to return.
