Lot Essay

Jean-Gabriel Prêtre worked in the circle of Edouard Traviès (1809-c. 1865) together with P-L. Oudart (1796-1850) and produced watercolours for the engraved plates for the different editions of M.A. Richard's Oeuvres Complètes de Buffon, Paris, 1825-8, 1834, 1838 and 1845.
The present watercolour was engraved for volume IV of the 1925-8 edition.
The Sulphur-crested cockatoo is native to New Guinea and Australia and the Salmon-crested cockatoo to South Moluccas, Indonesia.
