EDWARD LEAR (1812-88) and JAMES DE CARLE SOWERBY (1787-1871)
Tortoises, Terrapins, and Turtles. London, Paris and Frankfurt: Henry Sotheran, Joseph Baer & Co., 1872. 2° (365 x 274mm). 61 hand-coloured lithographic plates by Edward Lear after J.D.C. Sowerby. (Some light browning, very light spotting to text leaves and a few plates.) Original russet cloth, title lettered in gilt on spine (small stain on front cover). Provenance: William Thomas, Baron Bolton (armorial bookplate, signature).
First complete edition of these plates. The plates had been prepared for Thomas Bell's Mongraph of the Testudinata, published in parts from 1836 to 1842, and 40 were included there. The work was never completed, however, and the remaining plates lay unpublished for 30 years until Henry Sotheran took them for the present work. Nissen ZBI 1701; Wood 1872.
