Lot Essay

While a number of small rugs with this field design are known (for a discussion of the early examples of these see the note to lot 43, a prayer rug sold in these Rooms, 16 October 1997), no other example appears to have been published of this format. It retains the variety of colouring and filling drawing normally associated with the best and earliest examples of the smaller group. The border is one more frequently encountered with other field designs (see lot 107 in this sale).
