Lot Essay

Ian Bennett, when discussing rugs from this area, regrets the fact that none of them are dated (Bennett, I.:Oriental Rugs: Volume 1, Caucasian, London, 1981, p.175). The present example is therefore of considerable interest. Not only is it one of the best proportioned of the group, but it also has a secure date. A number of comparable examples are published including Herrmann, E.: Seltene Orientteppiche VII, Munich, 1985, no.37, pp.88-9; Benardout, R.: Caucasian Rugs, London, 1981, p.48; Bausback, P.: Antike Orientteppiche, Braunschweig, 1978, pp.228-9; Sotheby's New York, 10 April 1997, lot 42; and Werner Weber, Zurich, October 1990, lot 100.
