A French ormolu mounted, mahogany, burr walnut and ebonised library suite
In the Louis XIV Style, Late 19th/Early 20th Century
Comprising a bureau plat with inkwell and a large library cabinet; the bureau plat with a rectangular top, inset with a gilt-tooled tan coloured leather writing surface, with acanthus-cast frieze with a central drawer above the kneehole and fitted with a pair of drawers to each side, the top right-hand drawer with a silvered metal retailers label MERCIER FRèRES rue Faubourg St. Antoine Paris, the sides each with a pull-out leather-lined slide, above a panel centred by a mask, on square tapering legs, headed by foliate blocks and on a foliate-cast sabots; the ink-stand with a portoro marble shaped base with a moulded edge, the raised upper part with a pair of circular inkwells, each with a lid cast with a mask and scrolling foliage, centred by a square balsuter shaped well, on shaped foot, the lower part with a recess for pens; the library cabinet of breakfront outline, with a triple stepped top above a moulded cornice with an acanthus-cast frieze, above a central panel door, flanked to each side by a pair of glazed panel doors, with ormolu frames and silk lining with a further panel door to each each flank, the interior with adjustable shelves, the sides each with a brass line inlaid panel, on conforming plinth base

The Mercier workshop was established by Claude Mercier in 1828. They exhibited to much acclaim in the major international exhibitions during the 19th. The firm changed its name to Mercier Frères in 1867.
