Perhaps the finest ébéniste and bronzier of the late 19th century, Franois Linke (1855-1946) produced, in collaboration with the sculptor Léon Messager, furniture of the highest quality at his workshop at 170, rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine, later at 26, Place Vendôme. Next to furniture made in the ormolu-mounted rocaille style, Linke also produced furniture in the styles of the ancien régime of the 18th century.

The table top closely resembles the upper section of a gilt-bronze mirrored tray-on-stand, also by Linke, sold at Sotheby's, London, 3 October 1997, lot 183.
