Lot Essay

"My paintings are, of course, concerned with generating visual sensations, but certainly not to the exclusion of emotion. One of my aims is that these two responses shall be experienced as one and the same" (K. Stiles and P. Selz, 'Theories and Documents of Contemporary Art', Berkeley, 1996, p.112).

"A baroque convex/concave shaped area: the internal curvilinear divisions are precipitated by two diagonals, and by an extreme increase/decrease movement across the top and base of the area respectively. The regular black and white intervals of the chevron maintain a constant." (Ehrenzweig 'The Pictorial Space of Bridget Riley', Art International February, 1965)
