The Rev. James Symes (d.1819) was the son of Richard Symes Esq. who had inherited the estate of Ballyarthur from his uncle Councillor Mitchelborne. Symes was at one time Chaplin to H.R.H. The Duke of Kent and was evidently keenly interested in agriculture. The commission for the dishes survives in the Garrard ledgers which are preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
