AN ITALIAN GILTWOOD MIRROR
Late 17th Century
The later rectangular plate with a stiff-leaf border and two concentric mirrored bands with stiff-leaf divisions and C-scroll and foliate swagged angle clasps, each side centred by a youth among C-scrolls and foliate swags, surmounted by a shaped crest with two embracing youths flanked by conforming ornaments, the cresting of slightly larger width but probably original, the central plate with later backboards

Lot Essay

A pair of giltwood mirrors with similar youths in the pierced carving suspending related fruiting garlands, from the collection of O.V. Watney, Esq. [+], Cornbury Park, Charlbury, Oxfordshire, was sold at Christie's house sale, 22 May 1967, lot 157.
