A NEAPOLITAN GILTWOOD SIDE TABLE
First half 18th Century
The shaped and waved verde antico marble top above a pierced apron with foliate scrolls and flowers surrounding a central scallop-shell, on deeply scrolling cross-hatched C-scroll legs headed by foliage and trailing leaves, joined by a waved X-shaped stretcher centred by a grotesque mask surmounted by a pierced scallop-shell and flowers and terminating in claw and ball feet, the top of the support stencilled 'BURNS 79' and 'VAN 1', the underside with an old paper label inscribed '12'
38¼ in. (97 cm.) high; 61 in. (155 cm.) wide; 27½ in. (70 cm.) deep

A giltwood side table with nearly identical feet and exaggerated hipped legs is in the Museo Correale di Terranova, Sorrento (A. Putaturo Murano, Il Mobile Napoletano del Settecento, Naples, 1977, plate VIIb).
