A LARGE BLACK AND GILT-LACQUER DISPLAY CABINET ON A BASE
18th century, the base 19th century
The upper section with thirteen variously sized spaces of diverse shapes each fronted by similar pierced fretwork borders and all surfaces lacquered, painted and gilt with chilong and dragons among foliage and lotus scrolls, beside clouds, bats and large geometric floral arrangements, the base with two wide rectangular open spaces with pierced-work aprons below four shallow drawers, age cracks restored
65 in. (165 cm.) high, 89½ in. (227 cm.) wide, 12½ in. (32 cm.) deep

Lot Essay

Lacquer display cabinets of this size appear to be quite rare. Compare however, the fretwork and gilt painting on the black lacquered stand illustrated in The Precious Arts and Crafts of Ming and Qing Dynasties, Hong Kong, n.d., no. 203.
